Overview

From Arthur C. Clarke Award-winner Adrian Tchaikovsky comes Shroud, an utterly gripping, hard-edged masterwork of first contact on a profoundly hostile planet. Blending uncompromising scientific worldbuilding with sheer survival terror, Tchaikovsky transports readers to a pitch-black moon where humanity’s first encounter with alien life turns into a grueling fight against an environment deadlier than anything imaginable.

Synopsis

“They looked into darkness. The darkness looked back…”

When a deep-space expedition to a distant star system discovers a pitch-black moon pulsing with radio activity, they name it Shroud. Its high-gravity, high-pressure, zero-oxygen environment is entirely lethal to human life, though ripe for industrial exploitation.

They never intended to go down there—until a catastrophic accident forces Juna Ceelander and Mai Ste Etienne to crash-land on its inhospitable surface in a barely adequate escape vehicle. Stranded and fighting for survival, the two women embark on a grueling trek across a world designed to crush them. But their tenuous existence is threatened further by Shroud’s extraordinary, utterly alien species. If they manage to escape, they will have to explain the impossible and translate the incomprehensible.

Why It Made The Shortlist

  • Immaculate Hard SF Worldbuilding: Tchaikovsky crafts one of the most vividly terrifying and genuinely alien extraterrestrial ecosystems in modern speculative fiction.
  • Relentless Tension & Survival Stakes: A masterclass in pacing that combines high-stakes engineering problems with visceral human endurance.
  • Intellectually Provocative First Contact: Moves far beyond traditional tropes to explore true, radical alien intelligence and the immense translation barrier between species.

Praise & Reviews

“Thrilling, terrifying and fascinating in equal measure. A gripping story of survival and human endeavour against all odds. The most thought-provoking book I’ve read in a long time.”

— Tim Peake, British ESA astronaut

“Crunchy, conceptual SF at its best . . . the best alien contact novel I’ve read since Peter Watts’ Blindsight, and that is high praise indeed.”

— Richard Morgan, author of Altered Carbon

“Clever, vivid and terrifying. Shroud is probably the most alien world anyone could possibly imagine. But no one has an imagination like Adrian Tchaikovsky.”

— Jim Al-Khalili, presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The Life Scientific
