“…worldbuilding touches all aspects of your story. It touches plot and character as well. If you don’t know the culture your character comes from, how can you know what he’s really like? You must know your characters on a much deeper level than you would if you just shrugged your way into a cookie cutter fantasy world.”

Frequently Asked Questions

When will the next award winner be announced?

The award ceremony takes place as part of the World Fantasy Convention – so usually late October.

Is the award for UK authors only?

No, but it is for UK publications.

When do submissions close each year?

We will be accepting awards until mid-March.

Do any books not qualify? – i.e. novellas (based on word count)

There is no limit on word count. How comparatively immersive a story is should not be related to the size of the volume.

What genres qualify? – i.e. fantasy, science fiction, horror

We are deliberately genre-less – hence the description of speculative fiction (although we could just as easily simply say ‘fiction’!)

What period is covered by the award?

All publications from the previous year can be submitted.
